Chasing Autumn's Palette: California Fall Foliage

In sunny California, the shift from sizzling Summer to enchanting Fall is sweeping through the air. The days are beginning to feel crisp, the sun feels warm but not blazing upon your skin. As you wander beneath the trees, their leaves ignite into a mesmerizing symphony of colors. On every street, neighbors are transforming their homes into whimsical havens of fall and Halloween magic. Meanwhile, the aroma of freshly brewed chocolatito caliente fills your home, complemented by your snug cobijas, creating warm and comfy vibes. But before you surrender entirely to the allure of hibernation, consider planning a trip to explore the radiant foliage that California has to offer. Below, we've compiled a carefully curated list of locations where you can immerse yourself in the breathtaking kaleidoscope of Fall colors.

Southern California

Wrightwood

Wrightwood is only an hour and a half away from Los Angeles. It is popularly known as home to one of the biggest ski resorts in Southern Califonia, Mountain High.  Fall is the perfect time to visit this mountain town before the snow begins to fall. The weather will allow you to hike comfortably so make sure to pack those hiking boots. Some of the most popular trails are the Blue Ridge Trail, Mount Baden-Powell Trail, and Big Horn Mine Trail.

Julian

Julian, also known as Apple Town, is part of San Diego County and is located in the beautiful Cuyamaca Mountains. It is about an hour and a half from Downtown San Diego. Julian will transport you to California’s gold mining era with some of its buildings dating back to the 1800’s! You could even take a self-walking tour to learn more about its history. Julian’s Main Street also has plenty of restaurants to choose from. Some are known for their delicious apple pie! For your stay we recommend this viajera owned Air B&B.

Idyllwild

Idyllwild is nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains in Riverside County. It is about a 2 hour drive from Downtown Los Angeles. Idyllwild is a small mountain town where you can experience mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, and camping. The mountain town is also known for its “artsy” culture as  it is home to one of the top arts high schools in the West Coast, Idyllwild Arts Academy. Popular hiking trails: Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail, Marion Mountain to San Jaciento Peak, and Idyllwild South Loop.

Northern California

Yosemite

A fall destination list cannot be created without including Yosemite. With less crowds and cooler temperatures, it is the perfect time to go! You can drive through tunnels formed by the Big Leaf maple trees which are filled with golden yellow leaves. Of course you can not miss Yosemite’s scenic views with El Capitan or Half Dome in the background. Recommended hikes during the fall are Mist Trail and Valley Loop Trail.

Bishop Creek Canyon

Bishop Creek Canyon is an outdoor enthusiasts dream!  This pristine, rugged gorge winds its way through the heart of the Inyo National Forest and the Easter Sierra Mountains as its backdrop. Bishop Creek Canyon is renowned for its vibrant autumn transformation when the aspen groves display of gold and orange. Popular hiking trails:  Lake Sabrina to Blue Lake Trail and Bishop Pass Trail.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a sight to see during any season but there is definitely something magical about being there during the fall. The summer crowds are gone. Folks (and the bears) are preparing for the winter snow fall. The lake temperatures do start to drop in the fall but activities like kayaking and boating are still possible. You will find plenty do to when it comes to dining and shopping in both the south and north shores. Popular fall views: Fallen Leaf Lake and Spooner Lake.
